Smooth Greensnake Opheodrys vernalis

Non-venomous

Description: 11¾ - 20 inches. Smooth greensnakes are usually bright green, but may rarely be tan. The belly is light yellow. Hatchling smooth greensnakes are darker in appearance and may be olive green, gray, or even blueish.

Similar Species: Smooth greensnakes may be confused with racers in pictures, but young racers within the size range of smooth greensnakes will have a blotched appearance rather than being a solid color.

Comments: This species may be found statewide in appropriate habitat. Many observations occur near wetlands surrounded by grassy uplands.
